Historic Note:

Lenore Asta Schaldemose, the eldest child of Gunnlaugur Schaldemose and Kristín Goodman was born November 21 1903, in Winnipegosis, Manitoba. Her heritage was Icelandic and her family attended the Methodist, and after 1925, United Church in Winnipegosis. Lenore’s elementary and high school education was in Winnipegosis.

Lenore attended a nurses training program in Dauphin, Manitoba. She worked as a nurse at the Brandon (Manitoba) Residential School (United Church) in 1926.

From at least 1930 to 1940 Lenore was employed at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. In 1941 she married Gordon Kirk, a Canadian from Ontario. He was a widower with two young daughters. The family resided in Etobicoke, Ontario (now part of Toronto). Lenore was an active member at St. James United Church on Burnhamthorpe Road.

Lenore died January 20, 1985 in Toronto, Ontario.

Scope and Content

The surviving record of Lenore (Schaldemose) Kirk is a photo album containing 20 black and white images taken during the year that she worked at the Brandon Residential School, and a photograph of Lenore probably from Brandon, her wedding photograph from 1941 and a portrait from c 1980s.

Custodial History

The album was donated to the Archives on behalf of her family of origin by her brother Baldur Schaldemose and sister June (Schaldemose) Simpson. Additional biographical information and photographs were donated by Ruth Simpson in 2014.
