This collection was created in 2014 while preparing materials to be sent to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission on Indian Residential Schools.

The Collection consists a small collection of Progress (Newsletter), materials that were previously in the Vertical Files (4 folders of material of unknown origin) and a collection of photographs which were accessioned with material from Coulter Pastoral Charge (Manitoba) but had no known connection with the Charge.

All the items in this collection are included in the UThe United Church of Canada Archives Manitoba Northwestern Ontario Conference and All Native Circle Conference 2014 Index of IRS Related Records and were digitized for submission to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

Record Level Description

Progress, Folder 1

Progress is a newsletter produced by the students of the Indian Industrial School (Presbyterian), Regina, North West Territories. Its stated purpose: “to further the interests of the Indian work of the Presbyterian Church in Canada and to give the public information regarding the race and its advancement.” The contents include school news, short stories, poems, practical tips and humour.

The holdings consist of 8 bound newsletters: Vol. X, November 1903, No.3; Vol. X, December 1903, No.4; Vol. XI, January 1904, No.5; Vol. XI, February 1904, No.6; Vol. XI, May 1904, No.9; Vol. XI, June 1904,No. 10; Vol. XII, October 1904, No. 11, Vol. XII, November 15, 1904, No. 13.

Brandon Indian Residential School Records 1936-1959 Folder 3

The source of these records is unknown. They include Yearbooks, newspaper clipping, correspondence.  One document, a 1957 Memo, possibly written by E.E.M. Joblin, has Restricted Access due to personnel Assessment disclosures.

Conference of Indian Residential School Principals 1934 Folder 4

The source of these records is unknown. Agenda and Data Book from Conference of Indian Residential School Principals, Board of Home Missions, Woman’s Missionary Society, The United Church of Canada January 29-30, 1934, P 86.

Coulter Indian Residential School Photographs Collection Folder 5

These photographs came with materials from the Coulter (Lyleton -Pierson) United Church Pastoral Charge, Manitoba. There was no information linking the photographs to the Charge. The photographs were relocated to this collection in April 2014. An item level description is included in the Collection Description.  The photographs can be viewed here.

Restrictions on Access:  One document in Brandon Residential School (Folder 3) is restricted.

Language:  The materials are in English.

Accurals:  Since this Collection was created by the Archives from material of unknown provenance no further accurals are expected.
